Mto. GIL JARDIM
Since 1984, Gil Jardim has been professor of the Department of Music at the Communication and Arts School at the University of São Paulo (USP), where he teaches Orchestral Conduction. Since 2001, he became the Artistic Director of the USP Chamber Orchestra (OCAM) and in 2006 he was elected the Department Director for 4 years. Along this period he has introduced a renewed working concept which allowed the Department of Music repositioning in the Brazilian musical scenario with a daring and outstading program besides the presence of national and international recognized soloists for concerts and masterclasses.
In 2008 he was the responsible for the First International Festival for Contemporary Percussion (Percussivo USP-2008) and also General Director of the First Ex Toto Corde Festival (International Festival for strings) and the First Guitar International Festival at USP (Leo Brouwer Festival), which brought for the first time to Brazil this celebrated Cuban composer, Leo Brouwer for his 70th Birthday Celebrations.
On the side of his academy work he also developed important activities with artists of great expression in the popular music sector. Among many events there are relevant concert series with names such as Egberto Gismonti, Milton Nascimento, Gilberto Gil, Naná Vasconcelos, Ivan Lins, César Camargo Mariano, Leila Pinheiro, Gianluca Littera, Branford Marsalis. He also directed and conduct valuable recordings with most of them.
Concerning his carrer as conductor he has performed with notable with national and international orchestras. Among the international orchestras there are the Brooklyn Academy of Music Symphony Orchestra (New York), Royal Philarmonic Orchestra (London), Orchestra Regionalle del Lazio I Roma (Roma), Camerata Mexicana (Mexico) e Orquesta de Camara Mayo (Buenos Ayres). In Brazil has already worked with main orchestra of more than seven different States.
In 2005 for the French Brazilian Year Celebrations he directed the CD VILLA-LOBOS IN PARIS which brought back the reconstruction of the first historical concert Heitor Villa-Lobos held in Paris, in 1924. Part of the work was performed in Paris at the Carreu du Temple by the Ministry of Culture, Gilberto Gil´s invitation. This superb CD was awarded with the Diapason d’Or seal from the well-known French magazine Diapason, in 2006 and in the same year was also awarded as the best production in the category of Classic Music for the Brazilian II Bravo! Prime of Culture Award.
In November 2006 he published the book “O Estilo Antropofágico de Heitor Villa-Lobos” (The Anthropophagic Style of H.Villa-Lobos), recognized as one of the most important analysis on the composer’s pieces.
In 2008 Maestro Gil Jardim and his Philarmonia Brasileira Orchestra was invited by CAMI (Columbia Artist Management Inc – NY/USA) to a 40 day tournee, from cost to cost of the USA, with 27 concerts in 22 different States, whose repertoire was based on Brazilian Classical Music with the renown American soloist Branford Marsalis.
In November 2009, Gil Jardim is one of the responsibles for “Heitor Villa-Lobos International Symposium” at the University of São Paulo and the General Director the 2nd Leo Brouwer Festival.
