The Philarmonia Brasileira Orchestra was founded by Mto. Gil Jardim in 1995 in a versatile Chamber Orchestra format with the immediate engagement of accompanying the national tour of Milton Nascimento’s show “Amigo”. Between 1995 and 1996, Philarmonia Brasileira toured dozens of Brazilian cities and went on to perform with 35 musicians and two children choirs of nearly eighty children. After this national tour, maestro Gil Jardim conducted international concerts to promote the CD of that show, touring with the two children choirs and a quintet-based orchestra. At the international concerts they were joined by the Camerata Mexicana in Mexico; the Brooklyn Academy of Music Symphony Orchestra in New York; and the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra in London.
The orchestra’s high technical and artistic quality – achieved by enlisting top Brazilian instrumentalists – has expanded into several other projects of great scope encompassing both classical and popular music. In fact, this is Philarmonia Brasileira’s main strength: the highest artistic quality in a wide range of musical styles and genres.
Egberto Gismonti, Naná Vasconcelos and Milton Nascimento have been in constant partnership with Philarmonia Brasileira. Several other projects have been developed with guest artists such as César Camargo Mariano, João Bosco, Uakti, Dori Caymmi, Paulo Bellinatti, Tavinho Moura and Fernando Brant, Beto Guedes, Nivaldo Ornelas, among many others.
With musical arrangements and direction by conductor Gil Jardim, Philarmonia Brasileira played in recordings of well-known Brazilian popular artists such as Leila Pinheiro, Ivan Lins, Pedro Camargo Mariano, Milton Nascimento, and Gilberto Gil, to name but a few.
Philarmonia Brasileira has also undertaken important cultural projects of orchestral music and Brazilian popular music in various SESC theaters (Social Service of Commerce) in São Paulo. Among them, Café com Leite (Coffee and Milk), Sons de Orquestra (Orchestral Sounds), Encontro Nacional de Arranjadores e Maestros (National Meeting of Arrangers and Conductors) and the Chorando Alto (Chorinhos). Philarmonia Brasileira took part in the closing event of the First Brazilian Instrumental Music Summer Festival in Ilha Bela, accompanying Brazilian soloists and composers, such as Gilberto Gil, Egberto Gismonti and the Argentinian Dino Saluzi. Philarmonia Brasileira has also performed in corporate events for companies such as BankBoston, Clariant, and others.
Philarmonia Brasileira Orchestra is conceived as a modular structure which can be moulded according to each particular artistic proposal, but firmly maintaining the established norm of always engaging the finest musicians, such as the members of the Quarteto Amazônia, Quinteto Villa-Lobos, Banda Mantiqueira, among other renowned Brazilian professional groups.
In the field of classical music, Philarmonia Brasileira Orchestra has given concerts with the Canadian soprano Measha Brueggergosmann, in São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro in 2008, and has recorded the CD “VILLA LOBOS in Paris”, which was awarded the Diapason d’Or and the Prime de Cultura prize by the Brazilian cultural magazine Revista Bravo in the year 2006.
